ನಿಯಮಗಳು · The rules
ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪಂಚಮಿಗೆ ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ ಎಂದು ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ — ಷಷ್ಠೀ ರೂಪದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ: ಮರದ ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ, ರಾಮನ ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ. ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ತೃತೀಯೆಯ ಇಂದವೇ ಎರಡೂ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ: ಕೈಯಿಂದ ಬರೆದೆ (ಕರಣ); ಊರಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದೆ (ಅಪಾದಾನ).
School grammars list ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ (literally, from the direction of) as the fifth-case marker, riding on the genitive: ಮರದ ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ. In living Kannada, ಇಂದ does double duty: instrument (ಕೈಯಿಂದ ಬರೆದೆ) and source (ಊರಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದೆ). Know the textbook form; use ಇಂದ.
ಗಿಂತ ಮತ್ತು ಒಡನೆ — ಇವು ವಿಭಕ್ತಿಯೂ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಬಿಡಿ ಪದವೂ ಅಲ್ಲ; ನಡುವಿನ ರೂಪಗಳು. ಗಿಂತ ಚತುರ್ಥಿಯ ಜಾಡು ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತದೆ: ಮರಕ್ಕೆ → ಮರಕ್ಕಿಂತ, ನನಗೆ → ನನಗಿಂತ. ಒಡನೆ ಷಷ್ಠಿಯ ಜಾಡು: ರಾಮನ + ಒಡನೆ → ರಾಮನೊಡನೆ.
ಗಿಂತ and ಒಡನೆ sit between case suffix and independent word — Kannada's postposition-like forms. ಗಿಂತ tracks the dative shape: ಮರಕ್ಕೆ → ಮರಕ್ಕಿಂತ, ನನಗೆ → ನನಗಿಂತ. ಒಡನೆ/ಜೊತೆ/ಸಂಗಡ ride on the genitive: ರಾಮನೊಡನೆ, ನನ್ನ ಜೊತೆ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸಂಗಡ.
