 ಲತಾ —  ಅವನು ಯಾರು?

 ರವಿ —  ಅವನು ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಅರ್ಜುನ. 
He is my friend Arjuna.  
 ಲತಾ —  ಅವಳು ಯಾರು? 
Who is she?  
 ರವಿ —  ಅವಳು ಗೀತಾ. ಅವರು ಗೀತಾ ಅವರ ಅಮ್ಮ. 
She is Gita. That (respected) person is Gita's mother.

 ರವಿ —  ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಪುಸ್ತಕ.

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ನಾನು = I. ನೀನು = you (ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರಿಗೆ). ನೀವು = you (ಗೌರವ). ಅವನು = he, ಅವಳು = she, ಅದು = it, ಅವರು = they.

The core set: ನಾನು I · ನೀನು you (informal) · ನೀವು you (respectful/plural) · ಅವನು he · ಅವಳು she · ಅದು it/that thing · ಅವರು they. For things near you, use ಇದು “this”; for things far away, ಅದು “that”.

ಮುಖ್ಯ ವಿಷಯ: ಗೌರವದ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗೂ “ಅವರು” ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. “ಅವರು ನನ್ನ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು” — ಒಬ್ಬರೇ ಆದರೂ “ಅವರು”.

Key point: ಅವರು is not only “they”. Kannada uses it for ONE person when showing respect — teachers, elders, strangers. ಅವರು ನನ್ನ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು = “he/she is my teacher (respectful)”. This mirrors ನೀವು for “you”.

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತೀರಿ. ಯಾವ ಪದ? You are talking about your teacher (with respect). Which pronoun?

ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇರುವ ವಸ್ತು — “this” — ಯಾವ ಪದ? A thing near you — “this” — which word?

________ ಯಾರು? — ಅವಳು ಗೀತಾ. Who is SHE? — She is Gita.

ವಾಕ್ಯ ರಚಿಸಿ — “He is my friend.” Arrange the words.

ಬಳಸಿ ನೋಡಿ · Use it

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಜನರ ಕಡೆ ನೋಡಿ ಹೇಳಿ: “ಅವನು …”, “ಅವಳು …”, “ಅವರು …”. ವಸ್ತುಗಳಿಗೆ “ಇದು …”, “ಅದು …”.

Point (mentally) at people you know and say: ಅವನು … (he is …), ಅವಳು … (she is …), ಅವರು … (respected person). Then pick two objects: ಇದು ಪುಸ್ತಕ, ಅದು ಮನೆ — this is a book, that is a house.
