ಕಥೆ: ಸಿಂಹ ಮತ್ತು ಇಲಿ
 ಕಥೆ —  ಒಂದು ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಿಂಹ ಮರದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಮಲಗಿತ್ತು. 
In a forest, a big lion was sleeping under a tree.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಆಗ ಒಂದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಇಲಿ ಆಡುತ್ತಾ ಸಿಂಹದ ಮೈ ಮೇಲೆ ಓಡಿತು. ಸಿಂಹ ಎದ್ದು ಇಲಿಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿಯಿತು. 
Then a little mouse, playing, ran over the lion's body. The lion got up and caught the mouse.  
 ಇಲಿ —  ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಬಿಡು! ಒಂದು ದಿನ ನಾನು ನಿನಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. 
Please let me go! One day I will help you.  
 ಸಿಂಹ —  ಹ ಹ! ಇಷ್ಟು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಇಲಿ ನನಗೆ ಏನು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ? ಆದರೂ ಸರಿ, ಹೋಗು. 
Ha ha! What help can such a small mouse give me? Still, fine — go.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಿಂಹ ಬೇಟೆಗಾರ ಹಾಕಿದ ಬಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಕೊಂಡಿತು. ಅದು ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಕೂಗಿತು. 
Some days later the lion got caught in a net a hunter had laid. It roared loudly.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಆ ಕೂಗನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಇಲಿ ಓಡಿ ಬಂತು. ಅದು ತನ್ನ ಹಲ್ಲಿನಿಂದ ಬಲೆಯನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸಿತು. 
The mouse that heard the cry came running. With its teeth it cut the net.  
 ಸಿಂಹ —  ಗೆಳೆಯಾ, ನೀನು ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತು ನಿಜ ಆಯಿತು. ಧನ್ಯವಾದ!

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಈ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃದಂತಗಳನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿ: ‘ಬೇಟೆಗಾರ ಹಾಕಿದ ಬಲೆ’ = ಬೇಟೆಗಾರನು ಹಾಕಿದ ಬಲೆ; ‘ಕೂಗನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಇಲಿ’; ‘ನೀನು ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತು’. ಹೊಸ ಪಾಠ ಇಲ್ಲ — ಕಲಿತದ್ದು ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದೆ!

Spot the participles you just learned: ಬೇಟೆಗಾರ ಹಾಕಿದ ಬಲೆ (the net the hunter laid), ಕೂಗನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಇಲಿ (the mouse that heard the cry), ನೀನು ಹೇಳಿದ ಮಾತು (the word you said). Nothing new here — your grammar is now carrying a real story.

‘ಮಲಗಿತ್ತು’ ಎಂದರೆ ‘ಮಲಗಿ ಇತ್ತು’ — ಆ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ. ಕಥೆಯ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಗೆ ಈ ರೂಪ, ಘಟನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಸರಳ ಭೂತ: ಓಡಿತು, ಹಿಡಿಯಿತು, ಕೂಗಿತು.

ಮಲಗಿತ್ತು (was sleeping) sets the background scene; the events then fire in simple past — ಓಡಿತು (ran), ಹಿಡಿಯಿತು (caught), ಕೂಗಿತು (roared). Background state + event chain is the skeleton of every Kannada story.

ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಆರು ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳಿ. ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಎರಡು ಕೃದಂತ ಬಳಸಿ: “ಬೇಟೆಗಾರ ಹಾಕಿದ ಬಲೆ”, “ಕೂಗನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಇಲಿ”. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ನೀತಿ ಹೇಳಿ: “ಚಿಕ್ಕವರಿಂದಲೂ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಹಾಯ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ”.

Retell the story in six sentences, using at least two relative participles: ಬೇಟೆಗಾರ ಹಾಕಿದ ಬಲೆ, ಕೂಗನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಇಲಿ. Close with the moral: ಚಿಕ್ಕವರಿಂದಲೂ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಹಾಯ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ — even the small can give big help.
