 ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು —  ನಿನ್ನೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮಾಡದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಯಾರು? 
Who are the students who didn't do the work given yesterday?  
 ರಾಜು —  ನಾನು ಮಾಡಿದೆ, ಸರ್. ಮಾಡದ ಹುಡುಗ ಸುರೇಶ.

Suresh, for a student who doesn't read the lesson, the exam is hard, you know?  
 ಸುರೇಶ —  ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ ಸರ್. ನಿನ್ನೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೆ — ಕರೆಂಟ್ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಊರು, ರಾತ್ರಿ ಓದಲು ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. 
Sorry sir. Yesterday I had gone to our village — a village without electricity, I couldn't read at night.  
 ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು —  ಸರಿ. ತಿಳಿಯದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಇದ್ದರೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಕೇಳು.

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ನಿಷೇಧ ಕೃದಂತ: ಧಾತು + ಅದ — ಮಾಡು → ಮಾಡದ, ಓದು → ಓದದ, ಬರು → ಬರದ, ತಿಳಿ → ತಿಳಿಯದ. ‘ಇರು’ವಿನ ನಿಷೇಧ ರೂಪ ‘ಇಲ್ಲದ’: ನೀರು ಇಲ್ಲದ ಊರು = ನೀರು ಇಲ್ಲದ ಊರು.

The negative participle is root + ಅದ: ಮಾಡದ (who does not do), ಓದದ (who does not read), ಬರದ (who does not come), ತಿಳಿಯದ (not known). The negative of ಇರು is ಇಲ್ಲದ: ನೀರು ಇಲ್ಲದ ಊರು = a town without water — Kannada's way of saying ‘without’.

ಈಗ ಮೂರು ರೂಪಗಳು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ: ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೆಲಸ (ಭೂತ), ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸ (ವರ್ತಮಾನ-ಭವಿಷ್ಯತ್), ಮಾಡದ ಕೆಲಸ (ನಿಷೇಧ). ಈ ಮೂರರಿಂದ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ವಿವರಣೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ.

You now hold all three relative participles: ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೆಲಸ (work that was done), ಮಾಡುವ ಕೆಲಸ (work that is / will be done), ಮಾಡದ ಕೆಲಸ (work not done). Note the negative covers all tenses — context tells you whether it is ‘did not’ or ‘does not’.

ವಾಕ್ಯ ರಚಿಸಿ — “The boy who does no work gets no money.” Arrange the words.

“ನಾನು ________ ಊರು ಇನ್ನೂ ತುಂಬಾ ಇವೆ.” — ‘towns I have not seen’ Choose the participle.

ಬಳಸಿ ನೋಡಿ · Use it

ಒಂದೇ ಧಾತುವಿನಿಂದ ಮೂರು ವಾಕ್ಯ ಮಾಡಿ — ಉದಾ. ‘ಓದು’: “ನಾನು ಓದಿದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ…”, “ನಾನು ಓದುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ…”, “ನಾನು ಓದದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ…”. ಆಮೇಲೆ ‘ಮಾಡು’ ಮತ್ತು ‘ನೋಡು’ ಧಾತುಗಳಿಂದ ಹೀಗೆಯೇ ಹೇಳಿ.

Take one root and run it through all three: ನಾನು ಓದಿದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ (the book I read), ನಾನು ಓದುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ (the book I am reading), ನಾನು ಓದದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ (the book I haven't read). Repeat with ಮಾಡು and ನೋಡು.
