A friendship-test tale that exercises reported speech and time clauses.

ಕಥೆ: ಇಬ್ಬರು ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು ಮತ್ತು ಕರಡಿ
 ಕಥೆ —  ಸೋಮ ಮತ್ತು ಭೀಮ ಎಂಬ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು ಒಂದು ಕಾಡಿನ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. 
Two friends named Soma and Bhima were going along a forest path.  
 ಸೋಮ —  ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಏನು ಬಂದರೂ ನಾವು ಒಬ್ಬರನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರು ಬಿಡಬಾರದು, ಸರಿಯಾ? 
Whatever comes in the forest, we must not abandon each other, all right?  
 ಭೀಮ —  ಖಂಡಿತ! ನೀನು ಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದರೆ ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನ ಜೊತೆ ಇರುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಮಾತು ಕೊಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. 
Certainly! I give my word that if you are in trouble, I will stay with you.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದೂರ ಹೋದಾಗ ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕರಡಿ ಬಂತು. ಭೀಮ ಸೋಮನನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬೇಗ ಮರ ಹತ್ತಿದನು. 
When they had gone a little way, a big bear came. Bhima left Soma and quickly climbed a tree.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಮರ ಹತ್ತಲು ಬಾರದ ಸೋಮ ನೆಲದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮಲಗಿ ಉಸಿರು ಬಿಗಿ ಹಿಡಿದನು. ಕರಡಿ ಸತ್ತವರನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಅವನು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದನು. 
Soma, who didn't know how to climb trees, lay on the ground and held his breath. He had heard that bears don't touch the dead.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಕರಡಿ ಬಂದು ಸೋಮನ ಕಿವಿಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಮೂಸಿ ನೋಡಿತು. ಆಮೇಲೆ ಅದು ಹೊರಟುಹೋಯಿತು. 
The bear came, sniffed near Soma's ear, and then went away.  
 ಭೀಮ —  ಕರಡಿ ನಿನ್ನ ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಏನು ಹೇಳಿತು? 
What did the bear say in your ear?  
 ಸೋಮ —  ಕಷ್ಟ ಬಂದಾಗ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗುವವನು ನಿಜವಾದ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿತು! 
It said that one who leaves you when trouble comes is not a true friend!  

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಗಮನಿಸಿ: ‘ಮರ ಹತ್ತಲು ಬಾರದ ಸೋಮ’ — ‘ಬಾರದ’ ನಿಷೇಧ ಕೃದಂತ (who could not). ‘ಕರಡಿ ಸತ್ತವರನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದನು’ — ಕೇಳಿದ ಮಾತಿನ ವರದಿ. ಕೊನೆಯ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗುವವನು’ = ‘ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗುವ + ಅವನು’ — ಕೃದಂತದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ನಾಮಪದ: ‘the one who leaves’.

Notice three machines at work: ಮರ ಹತ್ತಲು ಬಾರದ ಸೋಮ (Soma, who couldn't climb — negative participle), the reported belief … ಮುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದನು (he had heard that…), and ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗುವವನು — participle + ಅವನು fused into a noun, ‘the one who leaves’. Add ‑ಅವಳು or ‑ಅವರು for ‘she who…’, ‘those who…’.

ಕಥೆಯ ಪಂಚ್ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ವರದಿ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ — ಕರಡಿ ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಆದರೆ ಸೋಮ ತನ್ನ ಪಾಠವನ್ನು ‘ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿತು’ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದು ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಥನದ ಪ್ರಿಯ ತಂತ್ರ!

The story's punchline rides on reported speech: the bear never spoke, but Soma delivers the moral as a quote — … ಅಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿತು. Wrapping a lesson inside ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿತು is a beloved move of Kannada storytelling — steal it for your own retellings.
