Questions and negation, formally
ಆ/ಏ ಪ್ರಶ್ನಾರ್ಥಕ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ, ಪ್ರಶ್ನಾರ್ಥಕ ಪದಗಳು, ಇಲ್ಲ-ಅಲ್ಲ-ಬೇಡ ನಿಷೇಧ, ಅಲ್ಲವೇ/ತಾನೇ ಎಂಬ ಬಾಲಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು.
Question suffixes, question words, the three negators, and tag questions ಅಲ್ಲವೇ / ತಾನೇ.

“ಊಟ ಆಯಿತಾ?”, “ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ”, “ಬೇಡ” — ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ನಿಮ್ಮ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯ ಮೇಲೇ ಇವೆ. ಇಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ-ನಿಷೇಧಗಳ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ನಿಯಮವಾಗಿ ನೋಡೋಣ.
ಊಟ ಆಯಿತಾ? (eaten yet?), ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (won't come), ಬೇಡ (don't) — all on the tip of your tongue from Arc A. Now we lay out the system formally.
ನಿಯಮಗಳು · The rules
ಅವನು ಬಂದನು → ಅವನು ಬಂದನಾ? ನೀನು ಬರುತ್ತೀಯಾ? ವಿವರದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ: ಯಾರು ಬಂದರು? ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದೀಯ? ಏಕೆ ಹೋದೆ? — ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ ಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ.
ಅವನು ಬಂದನು → ಅವನು ಬಂದನಾ? (did he come?); ನೀನು ಬರುತ್ತೀಯಾ? Content questions just use a question word — ಯಾರು (who), ಏನು (what), ಎಲ್ಲಿ (where), ಏಕೆ (why) — with no ಆ suffix.
ಅವನು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ; ನಾನು ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ — ಇಲ್ಲ. ಅವನು ವೈದ್ಯನಲ್ಲ; ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಪುಸ್ತಕವಲ್ಲ — ಅಲ್ಲ. ಹೋಗಬೇಡ; ನನಗೆ ಕಾಫಿ ಬೇಡ — ಬೇಡ. ಮೂರನ್ನು ಬೆರೆಸಿದರೆ ವಾಕ್ಯ ತಪ್ಪಾಗುತ್ತದೆ!
ಇಲ್ಲ negates existence and actions: ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ (not at home), ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (will not come). ಅಲ್ಲ negates identity: ವೈದ್ಯನಲ್ಲ (is not a doctor). ಬೇಡ negates wishes and commands: ಹೋಗಬೇಡ (don't go), ಕಾಫಿ ಬೇಡ (no coffee for me). Mixing them up is a classic error — Lesson 6 returns to this.
ಇಂದು ಸೋಮವಾರ, ಅಲ್ಲವೇ? ನೀನು ಬರುತ್ತೀಯ, ತಾನೇ? — ಕೇಳುವವನು ಉತ್ತರ ಬಲ್ಲ; ಒಪ್ಪಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆಡುಮಾತು: ಅಲ್ವಾ, ತಾನೆ.
ಇಂದು ಸೋಮವಾರ, ಅಲ್ಲವೇ? (today is Monday, isn't it?); ನೀನು ಬರುತ್ತೀಯ, ತಾನೇ? (you're coming, right?). The speaker expects agreement. ಆಡುಮಾತು: ಅಲ್ವಾ.
