ತಪ್ಪು: ಅವಳು ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹೋದನು. ಸರಿ: ಅವಳು ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹೋದಳು. ತಪ್ಪು: ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಆಟ ಆಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಸರಿ: ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಆಟ ಆಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತಿದ್ದುವ ದಾರಿ: ಮೊದಲು ಕರ್ತೃವನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿ, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದದ ಕೊನೆ ನೋಡಿ.
Wrong: ಅವಳು ಹೋದನು (she went-masc). Right: ಅವಳು ಹೋದಳು. Wrong: ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಆಡುತ್ತದೆ (children plays). Right: ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಆಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. Method: find the subject first, then check the verb ending against it.
ಭಾಷೆ (ಬಾಷೆ ಅಲ್ಲ), ಕಥೆ (ಕತೆ ತದ್ಭವವಾಗಿ ಸರಿ, ಆದರೆ “ಕಥೆ” ಬರೆಯುವಾಗ ಥ ಬೇಕು), ಧೈರ್ಯ (ದೈರ್ಯ ಅಲ್ಲ), ಸಂತೋಷ, ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ — ಅಂಕಿತ ಅನುಸ್ವಾರ ತಪ್ಪದಿರಲಿ. ಅನುಮಾನ ಬಂದಾಗ ನಿಘಂಟು ನೋಡುವುದೇ ದಾರಿ.
Write ಭಾಷೆ not ಬಾಷೆ, ಧೈರ್ಯ not ದೈರ್ಯ; if you choose the tatsama ಕಥೆ, keep its ಥ (the tadbhava ಕತೆ is separately fine). Keep the anusvāra in ಸಂತೋಷ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ. When in doubt, the dictionary settles it.
ತಪ್ಪು: ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಸರಿ: ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಅಲ್ಲ. ತಪ್ಪು: ಅವನು ಇವತ್ತು ಊರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಸರಿ: ಅವನು ಇವತ್ತು ಊರಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ: “ಯಾವುದು?” ಎಂಬ ಗುರುತಿನ ಮಾತೇ — ಅಲ್ಲ; “ಇದೆಯೇ?” ಎಂಬ ಇರುವಿಕೆಯ ಮಾತೇ — ಇಲ್ಲ.
Wrong: ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಇಲ್ಲ. Right: …ಅಲ್ಲ (it is not my book — identity). Wrong: ಅವನು ಊರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲ. Right: …ಇಲ್ಲ (he is not in town — existence). Test: answering ‘which/what is it?’ → ಅಲ್ಲ; answering ‘is it there?’ → ಇಲ್ಲ.
