“ಅವನು ಕೊನೆಯ ಗಳಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೈ ಕೊಟ್ಟ!” — ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರೂ ಕೈ ಕೊಡಲಿಲ್ಲ; ಮೋಸ ಮಾಡಿದ ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ. ಪದಗಳ ಮೊತ್ತಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಬೇರೆಯೇ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುವ ಇಂಥ ಮಾತುಗಳೇ ನುಡಿಗಟ್ಟು; ಪೂರ್ಣ ವಾಕ್ಯವಾದ ಜಾಣ್ಮೆಯ ಮಾತು ಗಾದೆ.

ಕೈ ಕೊಟ್ಟ literally says ‘he gave a hand’ but means ‘he let me down’. Phrases whose meaning exceeds their words are ನುಡಿಗಟ್ಟು (idioms); complete sentences of folk wisdom are ಗಾದೆ (proverbs).

ಕೈ ಕೊಡು = ಮೋಸ ಮಾಡು; ತಲೆ ಕೆಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳು = ಅತಿ ಚಿಂತಿಸು; ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ಉರಿ = ಅಸೂಯೆ; ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಮಣ್ಣೆರಚು = ವಂಚಿಸು. ರಚನೆ ಕ್ರಿಯಾ ಸಮಾಸದ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ — ಆದರೆ ಅರ್ಥ ರೂಢಿಯದು.

ಕೈ ಕೊಡು (betray), ತಲೆ ಕೆಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳು (fret), ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ಉರಿ (envy — ‘stomach burns’), ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಮಣ್ಣೆರಚು (deceive — ‘throw dust in the eyes’). Structurally noun + verb, like the kriyā compounds of Level 11 — but the meaning is conventional.

ಷರತ್ತು + ಫಲ: ಕೈ ಕೆಸರಾದರೆ ಬಾಯಿ ಮೊಸರು; ಹನಿ ಹನಿ ಕೂಡಿದರೆ ಹಳ್ಳ — “ಆದರೆ” ಎಂಬ ಷರತ್ತಿನ ರೂಪ. ಆಜ್ಞೆ: ಹಾಸಿಗೆ ಇದ್ದಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲು ಚಾಚು; ಮನೆ ಗೆದ್ದು ಮಾರು ಗೆಲ್ಲು — ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದ ವಿಧಿರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ. ಸಮೀಕರಣ: ಮಾತು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿ, ಮೌನ ಬಂಗಾರ; ಆರೋಗ್ಯವೇ ಭಾಗ್ಯ — ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದವೇ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಸಮ ವಾಕ್ಯ!

Condition + result: ಕೈ ಕೆಸರಾದರೆ ಬಾಯಿ ಮೊಸರು, ಹನಿ ಹನಿ ಕೂಡಿದರೆ ಹಳ್ಳ (drop by drop makes a stream) — note the conditional ಆದರೆ ending. Command: ಹಾಸಿಗೆ ಇದ್ದಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲು ಚಾಚು, ಮನೆ ಗೆದ್ದು ಮಾರು ಗೆಲ್ಲು (win at home, then win outside) — imperative verbs. Equation: ಮಾತು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿ, ಮೌನ ಬಂಗಾರ; ಆರೋಗ್ಯವೇ ಭಾಗ್ಯ (health alone is wealth) — no verb at all, Kannada's zero copula at work.

ತಾಳಿದವನು ಬಾಳಿಯಾನು — “ಬಾಳಿಯಾನು” ಎಂಬುದು ಹಳೆಯ ಸಂಭಾವನಾ ರೂಪ (ಬಾಳಬಲ್ಲನು ಎಂದರ್ಥ). ಹನಿ ಹನಿ — ದ್ವಿರುಕ್ತಿ. ಗಾದೆ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಪಳೆಯುಳಿಕೆಗಳ ಗಣಿ.

ತಾಳಿದವನು ಬಾಳಿಯಾನು (he who endures will live) keeps the old potential form ಬಾಳಿಯಾನು ‘may well live’. ಹನಿ ಹನಿ is a dvirukti you know from Level 11. Proverbs are a living museum of older Kannada.
