Level 13 · Lesson 1

ಗ್ರಾಂಥಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಆಡುಭಾಷೆ
Written and spoken Kannada

ಗ್ರಂಥಸ್ಥ ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೂ ಆಡುಮಾತಿಗೂ ಇರುವ ಭೇದ, ಅದನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸುವ ಸುಲಭ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ, ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ಭೇದಗಳು, ವಚನಕಾರರ ಪಾಠ.

The gap between written Kannada and everyday speech, a one-glance test for telling them apart, the regional varieties, and the lesson of the vacana poets.

ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ · You already know this

You have finished twelve levels. You split sandhis, name compounds and can construe any Kannada sentence handed to you. Then you stand at a bus stop in Bengaluru and nobody says ನಾನು ಈಗ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ — they say ನಾನು ಈಗ ಬರ್ತೀನಿ. Both are Kannada and both are correct. Nothing in your grammar is missing: the written variety and the spoken one draw on different sets of endings, and this chapter is about telling them apart at a glance.

ನಿಯಮಗಳು · The rules

Kannada has two registers: ಗ್ರಾಂಥಿಕ, the written variety of books, newspapers and school texts, and ಆಡುಮಾತು, the variety people actually speak. One person uses both every day and switches without thinking about it.

The two live side by side and neither is dying. Newspapers, official letters, textbooks and formal speeches are ಗ್ರಾಂಥಿಕ; film dialogue, shop talk and messages to friends are ಆಡುಮಾತು. Linguists call this arrangement diglossia. Knowing one does not hand you the other for free — but the relation between them is regular, which is why a short chapter can close the gap.

The clearest difference sits at the end of the verb: written ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ, ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ, ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಇರುತ್ತದೆ against spoken ಮಾಡ್ತೀನಿ, ಹೋಗ್ತೀನಿ, ಮಾಡ್ತಾನೆ, ಇರುತ್ತೆ.

This is your mechanical test. The contraction happens only at the end of the word; at the front the root stays recognizable. ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ and ಹೋಗ್ತೀನಿ both begin from the root ಹೋಗು that you learned in level 10 — in the spoken form its ಉ simply drops, giving ಹೋಗ್ — so you never have to guess which verb it is: you only have to read the tail. And since the Kannada verb comes last, the tail of the last word classifies the whole page.

Literary past forms carry a final -ನು: ಅವನು ಬಂದನು, ಮಾಡಿದನು, ನಾನು ಮಾಡಿದೆನು, where ordinary Kannada says ಅವನು ಬಂದ, ಮಾಡಿದ, ನಾನು ಮಾಡಿದೆ.

Note that ಬಂದಳು and ಬಂದರು have no -ನು to drop — there is no ಬಂದಳ, no ಬಂದರ — so the ಬಂದನು / ಬಂದ pair is the one dependable marker this test can use. In speech these too contract: ಬಂದ್ಲು, ಬಂದ್ರು, ಮಾಡಿದ್ರು. You will meet the -ನು forms constantly in older novels, in purāṇa retellings and in formal prose, and now they will read as a style rather than as a puzzle.

Spoken Kannada shifts from district to district — Mysuru, Bengaluru, Dharwad, Mangaluru, Kalaburagi — and every one of those is proper Kannada. The written standard simply leans on the Mysore–Bengaluru variety, which makes it the norm, not the best.

North Karnataka uses the polite -ರಿ freely — ಬರ್ರಿ, ಹೋಗ್ರಿ, ಏನ್ರಿ. Coastal Kannada has grown up next door to Tulu and Konkani. The Kannada you have learned is understood everywhere; when you settle in a district, pick up its endings from the people there rather than correcting them toward your textbook.

In the twelfth century Basavaṇṇa, Allama Prabhu, Akka Mahādēvi and the other vacanakāras deliberately set aside the ornate campū poetry of the courts and wrote in plain speech — the vacana, short rhythmic prose in the language people actually used, in place of courtly verse.

Kannada's history is divided into three stages: ಹಳಗನ್ನಡ, Old Kannada — the Kavirājamārga, Pampa, Ranna; ನಡುಗನ್ನಡ, Middle Kannada — the vacanas, Kumāravyāsa, the dāsa songs, Sarvajña; and ಹೊಸಗನ್ನಡ, Modern Kannada, roughly from the nineteenth century onward. So an old inscription differs from today's newspaper twice over: a different register and a different stage of the language.

ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ · Practice

ಅವನು ಪತ್ರವನ್ನು ಬರೆದನು — ಇದು ಯಾವ ಶೈಲಿ? Which register is this sentence in?
ಗ್ರಾಂಥಿಕ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ — ಆಡುಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ________. Give the everyday form of ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಗ್ರಾಂಥಿಕ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಆಡುಮಾತಿನ ರೂಪದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಜೋಡಿಸಿ. Match each written form with its spoken form.
ಧಾರವಾಡ, ಮಂಗಳೂರು, ಕಲಬುರಗಿಯ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಮಾತು ಯಾವುದು? Which statement about those regional varieties is correct?
ಹನ್ನೆರಡನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದ ವಚನಕಾರರು ಯಾವ ಶೈಲಿಯನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು? Which style did the twelfth-century vacanakāras choose?

ಬಳಸಿ ನೋಡಿ · Use it

Now do this. Read one report in a Kannada daily and mark only the tail of the last word in each sentence. Then listen to five minutes of dialogue from a Kannada film and count how many times you hear a full -ಉತ್ತೇನೆ; the number will be close to zero. Finally take three sentences from the newspaper and say them aloud in ಆಡುಮಾತು, then read a page of Basavaṇṇa's vacanas. Two registers, one language — and from here on you will always know which one you are in.
