ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ “brother” ಎಂಬ ಒಂದು ಪದ ಇಲ್ಲ! ಹಿರಿಯ-ಕಿರಿಯ ನೋಡಿ ಪದ ಬೇರೆ: ಅಣ್ಣ = ಹಿರಿಯ ಸಹೋದರ, ತಮ್ಮ = ಕಿರಿಯ ಸಹೋದರ; ಅಕ್ಕ = ಹಿರಿಯ ಸಹೋದರಿ, ತಂಗಿ = ಕಿರಿಯ ಸಹೋದರಿ.
Kannada has no single word for “brother” or “sister” — age relative to YOU decides the word. ಅಣ್ಣ elder brother, ತಮ್ಮ younger brother; ಅಕ್ಕ elder sister, ತಂಗಿ younger sister. So “I have two brothers” must specify: ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಣ್ಣ, ಒಬ್ಬ ತಮ್ಮ.
ಅಣ್ಣ, ಅಕ್ಕ — ಹಿರಿಯರು. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಗೌರವ: “ಅಣ್ಣ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ”, “ಅಕ್ಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ” ಎಂದು ಹಲವರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತಮ್ಮ, ತಂಗಿ — “ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ”, “ಬರುತ್ತಾಳೆ” ಸಾಕು.
The system pairs with the respect grammar you know: elders (ಅಮ್ಮ, ಅಪ್ಪ, and in many families ಅಣ್ಣ, ಅಕ್ಕ) take the respectful -ತ್ತಾರೆ/ಇದ್ದಾರೆ forms, while ತಮ್ಮ and ತಂಗಿ take plain ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ/ಬರುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಇವರು/ಇವನು/ಇವಳು in the dialogue are the “this person” forms of ಅವರು/ಅವನು/ಅವಳು.

Introduce your real family aloud, choosing the correct elder/younger word for each sibling: ಇವರು ನನ್ನ ಅಮ್ಮ. ಇವನು ನನ್ನ ತಮ್ಮ. ಇವಳು ನನ್ನ ಅಕ್ಕ… If you are the eldest, say so: ನಾನು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಣ್ಣ / ಅಕ್ಕ!
