ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ವಿನಯದ ಆಜ್ಞೆ: ಧಾತು + ಇ. ಬಾ → ಬನ್ನಿ. ಕೊಡು → ಕೊಡಿ. ಹೇಳು → ಹೇಳಿ. ಕೇಳು → ಕೇಳಿ. ನೋಡು → ನೋಡಿ. ಓದು → ಓದಿ. ಇದು “ನೀವು” ಜೊತೆಯ ರೂಪ.

The polite command pairs with ನೀವು: add -ಇ to the stem. ಕೊಡು → ಕೊಡಿ “please give”, ಹೇಳು → ಹೇಳಿ “please tell”, ಕೇಳು → ಕೇಳಿ, ನೋಡು → ನೋಡಿ, ಓದು → ಓದಿ. A few are irregular and worth memorising whole: ಬಾ → ಬನ್ನಿ “please come”, ಇರು → ಇರಿ “please stay/wait”, ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ “please sit”.

ಮಾತು ಮೃದು ಮಾಡಲು “ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ” ಸೇರಿಸಿ: “ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನೀರು ಕೊಡಿ”, “ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕೇಳಿ”. “ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು” = please: “ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಬನ್ನಿ”.

Kannada softens requests with ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ “a little”: ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನೀರು ಕೊಡಿ “please give a little water”, ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕೇಳಿ “please listen a moment”. The explicit word for “please” is ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು — polite but a touch formal; the -ಇ form alone is already courteous.
