 ರವಿ —  ಗೋಪಾಲ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾ! ಬೇಗ ಬಾ!

 ಗೋಪಾಲ —  ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ, ಇರು! 
I'm coming, wait!  
 ರವಿ —  ಚೆಂಡು ಕೊಡು. ಈಗ ನೋಡು — ಓಡು!

 ಗೋಪಾಲ —  ನಿಲ್ಲು, ನಿಲ್ಲು! ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕೇಳು.

 ಗೋಪಾಲ —  ಮೊದಲು ತಿಂಡಿ ತಿನ್ನು, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಆಡು!

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರಿಗೆ, ಚಿಕ್ಕವರಿಗೆ — ಧಾತುವೇ ಆಜ್ಞೆ: ಹೋಗು! ಕೇಳು! ಕೊಡು! ತಿನ್ನು! “ಬಾ” ಮಾತ್ರ ವಿಶೇಷ ರೂಪ.

With friends and youngsters, the bare verb stem IS the command: ಹೋಗು go!, ಕೇಳು listen!, ಕೊಡು give!, ತಿನ್ನು eat!, ನೋಡು look!, ಓಡು run!, ನಿಲ್ಲು stop!. Only a couple are special: ಬಾ “come!” (stem ಬರು) and ಇರು “wait/stay!”.

ಜೋಡಿ ನೆನಪಿಡಿ: ಬಾ–ಬನ್ನಿ, ಕೊಡು–ಕೊಡಿ, ಕೇಳು–ಕೇಳಿ, ಹೇಳು–ಹೇಳಿ. ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತೀರಿ ಎಂಬುದರ ಮೇಲೆ ರೂಪ. ಹಿರಿಯರಿಗೆ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ವಿನಯದ ರೂಪ!

Keep the pairs together in memory: ಬಾ/ಬನ್ನಿ, ಕೊಡು/ಕೊಡಿ, ಕೇಳು/ಕೇಳಿ, ಹೇಳು/ಹೇಳಿ, ನೋಡು/ನೋಡಿ. The choice mirrors ನೀನು vs ನೀವು. When in doubt — especially with elders or strangers — always choose the polite -ಇ form.

ತಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ “come!” — ಏನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತೀರಿ? To your little brother — “come!”

ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಗೆ “ಹೇಳಿ”ಯೋ “ಹೇಳು”ವೋ? To your teacher — ಹೇಳಿ or ಹೇಳು?

ಬಸ್ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ — ಬೇಗ ________! (run, informal) The bus is coming — run quickly!

ಜೋಡಿಸಿ — ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಮತ್ತು ಗೌರವ. Match informal and polite commands.

ವಾಕ್ಯ ರಚಿಸಿ — “First eat, then play!” (informal) Arrange the words.

ಬಳಸಿ ನೋಡಿ · Use it

ಒಂದು ಆಟ: ಒಬ್ಬ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತನಿಗೆ ಐದು ಆಜ್ಞೆ — ಬಾ, ನಿಲ್ಲು, ಓಡು… ಆಮೇಲೆ ಅದೇ ಐದು, ಹಿರಿಯರಿಗೆ — ವಿನಯದ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ.

Play “commander”: give an imaginary friend five informal orders (ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾ! ಚೆಂಡು ಕೊಡು! ಓಡು! ನಿಲ್ಲು! ಕೇಳು!). Then upgrade every one of them for a respected elder: ಬನ್ನಿ, ಕೊಡಿ, ಓಡಿ, ನಿಲ್ಲಿ, ಕೇಳಿ.
