ಖಂಡಿತ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ — ಮಾತು ಕೊಡುವುದು; ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ — ಬೀಳ್ಕೊಡುಗೆ.

ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ as a promise, and the culture of saying ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ when leaving.

 ಶಂಕರ್ —  ಮುಂದಿನ ತಿಂಗಳು ನನ್ನ ತಂಗಿಯ ಮದುವೆ. ನೀವು ಖಂಡಿತ ಬರಬೇಕು. 
Next month is my younger sister's wedding. You must definitely come.  
 ರಾಜು —  ಖಂಡಿತ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ! ಮನೆಯವರೆಲ್ಲರ ಜೊತೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ. 
I will definitely come! I'll come with the whole family.  
 ಶಂಕರ್ —  ಮರೆಯದೆ ಬನ್ನಿ. ನಿಮಗೆ ಕಾಯುತ್ತೇನೆ. 
Come without fail. I'll be waiting for you.  
 ರಾಜು —  ಆಯಿತು. ಈಗ ತಡ ಆಯಿತು — ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ. 
Done. It's late now — I'll take leave (lit. go and come).  
 ಶಂಕರ್ —  ಹೋಗಿ ಬನ್ನಿ!

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಮಾತು ಕೊಡಲು: ಖಂಡಿತ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ, ನಾಳೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ, ಮರೆಯದೆ ತರುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತ್ ರೂಪವೇ ಮಾತಿನ ಭರವಸೆ.

To make a promise, Kannada simply uses the future with a firm word: ಖಂಡಿತ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ (I'll definitely come), ಮರೆಯದೆ ತರುತ್ತೇನೆ (I'll bring it without fail), ನಿಮಗೆ ಕಾಯುತ್ತೇನೆ (I'll wait for you).

ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಪಾಠ: ಹೊರಡುವಾಗ “ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ” ಎನ್ನಬಾರದು — ಅದು ಅಶುಭ. “ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ” ಅಥವಾ “ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ” ಎನ್ನಬೇಕು. ಉಳಿದವರು “ಹೋಗಿ ಬಾ” / “ಹೋಗಿ ಬನ್ನಿ” ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.

A culture point every Kannadiga knows: when leaving, you never say ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ (I'm going) — it sounds final and inauspicious. Say ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ (I'll go and come back) or just ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ. The person staying replies ಹೋಗಿ ಬಾ (informal) or ಹೋಗಿ ಬನ್ನಿ (respectful). Leaving always carries the promise of return!

ಹೊರಡುವವರಿಗೆ ಗೌರವದಿಂದ ಏನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತೀರಿ? What do you say (respectfully) to the person who is leaving?

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮದುವೆಗೆ ನಾನು ________ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ. (definitely) I will definitely come to your wedding.

Role-play: invite a friend to dinner, have them promise ಖಂಡಿತ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ, then close with the leave-taking pair ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ — ಹೋಗಿ ಬಾ. Practice both roles aloud.
