ದೊಡ್ಡ, ಚಿಕ್ಕ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ, ಹೊಸ — ವಿಶೇಷಣಗಳ ಬಳಕೆ.

Use core adjectives before nouns and as predicates.

 ಗೀತಾ —  ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹೊಸ ಮನೆ ಹೇಗಿದೆ? 
How is your new house?  
 ರವಿ —  ತುಂಬಾ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ. ಅದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮನೆ. ಮುಂದೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ತೋಟ ಇದೆ. 
It's very nice. It's a big house. There's a small garden in front.  
 ಗೀತಾ —  ಹಳೆಯ ಮನೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕದು, ಅಲ್ಲವಾ? 
The old house was small, wasn't it?  
 ರವಿ —  ಹೌದು, ಅದು ಚಿಕ್ಕದು. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮನೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಜನ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರು. 
Yes, it was small. But it was a good house. The people there are good.  
 ಗೀತಾ —  ಹೊಸ ಊರು ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿದೆಯಾ? 
Is the new town beautiful?  
 ರವಿ —  ಹೌದು, ತುಂಬಾ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಊರು. ನೀವು ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಬನ್ನಿ!

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ವಿಶೇಷಣ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ನಾಮಪದದ ಮುಂದೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ: ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮನೆ, ಚಿಕ್ಕ ತೋಟ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಜನ. ವಿಶೇಷಣದ ರೂಪ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ — ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮನೆ, ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮರ, ದೊಡ್ಡ ಊರು.

A Kannada adjective sits before its noun and never changes form: ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮನೆ (big house), ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮರ (big tree), ದೊಡ್ಡ ಊರು (big town). This is simpler than many languages — no agreement on the adjective itself.

“ಈ ಮನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದು” — ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶೇಷಣಕ್ಕೆ ‘ದು’ ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ. ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗೆ: ಅವನು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವನು, ಅವಳು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವಳು, ಅವರು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರು.

As a predicate (‘the house IS big’) the adjective takes an ending that matches the subject: for things, add ‑ದು → ಈ ಮನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದು. For people, add ‑ವನು / ‑ವಳು / ‑ವರು → ಅವನು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವನು (he is good), ಅವಳು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವಳು (she is good), ಅವರು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರು (they are / he-she is, respectful).

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ವಾಕ್ಯ ಹೇಳಿ — “ನನ್ನ ಮನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದು / ಚಿಕ್ಕದು”, “ನನ್ನ ಊರು ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿದೆ” ಎಂದು. ಮನೆಯ ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಹೇಳಿ: “ಅವರು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರು”.

Say four sentences about your home: ನನ್ನ ಮನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದು / ಚಿಕ್ಕದು, ನನ್ನ ಊರು ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿದೆ. Add one about a person: ಅವರು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರು (they are good).
