 ಅಮ್ಮ —  ಅನು, ಆನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾ, ಕುದುರೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾ? 
Anu, which is big — the elephant or the horse?  
 ಅನು —  ಆನೆ ಕುದುರೆಗಿಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡದು. 
The elephant is bigger than the horse.  
 ಅಮ್ಮ —  ಸರಿ. ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ ಯಾವುದು? 
Right. In the forest, which animal is the biggest of all?  
 ಅನು —  ಆನೆಯೇ ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡದು. ಆದರೆ ಚಿರತೆ ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓಡುತ್ತದೆ. 
The elephant is the biggest of all. But the leopard runs fastest of all.  
 ಅಮ್ಮ —  ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ ಎತ್ತರ ಯಾರು? 
And in our house, who is the tallest of all?  
 ಅನು —  ಅಪ್ಪ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ ಎತ್ತರ. ನಾನು ಅಮ್ಮನಿಗಿಂತ ಚಿಕ್ಕವಳು! 
Father is the tallest of all. I am smaller than mother!  

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಹೋಲಿಕೆಗೆ ‘ಗಿಂತ’ ಬಳಸುತ್ತೇವೆ: ಆನೆ ಕುದುರೆಗಿಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡದು. ‘ಗಿಂತ’ ಚತುರ್ಥಿಯ ರೂಪಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ: ಮನೆಗೆ → ಮನೆಗಿಂತ, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ → ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ, ಅವನಿಗೆ → ಅವನಿಗಿಂತ, ನನಗೆ → ನನಗಿಂತ.

For ‘than’, attach ಗಿಂತ where the dative ‑ಗೆ would go: ಮನೆಗೆ → ಮನೆಗಿಂತ (than the house), ಅದಕ್ಕೆ → ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ (than it), ಅವನಿಗೆ → ಅವನಿಗಿಂತ (than him), ನನಗೆ → ನನಗಿಂತ (than me). The adjective itself does not change: ದೊಡ್ಡದು means both ‘big’ and ‘bigger’ — the ‑ಗಿಂತ phrase makes it a comparison.

“ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ” (ವಸ್ತುಗಳಿಗೆ) ಮತ್ತು “ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ” (ಜನರಿಗೆ) ಸೇರಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದು ‘ಅತಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು’ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಬರಹದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಅತ್ಯಂತ’ ಸಹ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ: ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಊರು.

The superlative is just ‘than all’: ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡದು (biggest of all things), ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ ಎತ್ತರ (tallest of all people). Written Kannada also uses ಅತ್ಯಂತ before an adjective: ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಊರು (a most beautiful town).

ಮೂರು ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ವಾಕ್ಯ ಹೇಳಿ: ನಿಮ್ಮ ಊರು, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಜನ, ಎರಡು ತಿಂಡಿಗಳು. ಉದಾ: “ದೋಸೆ ಇಡ್ಲಿಗಿಂತ ರುಚಿ”, “ನನ್ನ ತಂಗಿ ನನಗಿಂತ ಚಿಕ್ಕವಳು”.

Make three comparisons of your own — your town, your family, two foods. For example: ದೋಸೆ ಇಡ್ಲಿಗಿಂತ ರುಚಿ (dosa is tastier than idli), ನನ್ನ ತಂಗಿ ನನಗಿಂತ ಚಿಕ್ಕವಳು (my little sister is younger than me). Then crown a winner with ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ.
