ಕಾಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ನೀರು
Story: the crow and the water

ಕಥೆ: ಕಾಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ನೀರು
 ಕಥೆ —  ಒಂದು ಬೇಸಿಗೆಯ ದಿನ. ಒಂದು ಕಾಗೆಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆ ಆಯಿತು. 
One summer day. A crow got very thirsty.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಅದು ನೀರು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಊರಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಾರಿತು. ಎಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ನೀರು ಸಿಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. 
Searching for water, it flew over the town. It found water nowhere.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಒಂದು ಮನೆಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಒಂದು ಮಡಕೆ ಕಾಣಿಸಿತು. ಮಡಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನೀರು ಇತ್ತು. 
At last, near a house, a pot came into view. In the pot there was a little water.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಆದರೆ ನೀರು ತುಂಬಾ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಇತ್ತು. ಕಾಗೆಯ ಕೊಕ್ಕು ನೀರಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಲಿಲ್ಲ. 
But the water was very low. The crow's beak could not reach the water.  
 ಕಾಗೆ —  ಏನು ಮಾಡಲಿ? ನೀರು ಬೇಕು! 
What shall I do? I need water!  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಕಾಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೊತ್ತು ಯೋಚಿಸಿತು. ಆಮೇಲೆ ಅದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳನ್ನು ತಂದು ಒಂದೊಂದಾಗಿ ಮಡಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಕಿತು. 
The crow thought for a while. Then it brought small stones and dropped them one by one into the pot.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ನೀರು ಮೇಲೆ ಬಂತು. ಕಾಗೆ ನೀರು ಕುಡಿದು ಸಂತೋಷದಿಂದ ಹಾರಿಹೋಯಿತು. 
Slowly the water rose. The crow drank the water and flew away happily.  

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಇದು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮೊದಲ ಕಥೆ! ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಿಗೆ ನಪುಂಸಕ ರೂಪ: ಕಾಗೆ ಹಾರಿತು, ಯೋಚಿಸಿತು, ಕುಡಿಯಿತು. ‘ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಹಾರಿತು’ — ಎರಡು ಕೆಲಸ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.

Your first story! Animals take neuter verb forms in the past: ಹಾರಿತು (it flew), ಯೋಚಿಸಿತು (it thought), ಕುಡಿಯಿತು (it drank), ಬಂತು (it came). Note ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಹಾರಿತು — the ‑ತ್ತಾ form means ‘while doing’: it flew while searching.

ಕಥೆ ಹೇಳುವ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪದಗಳು: ಒಂದು ದಿನ (ಆರಂಭ), ಆಮೇಲೆ, ಕೊನೆಗೆ. ಈ ಮೂರು ಪದಗಳಿಂದ ಯಾವ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನೂ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು.

Three signposts carry any story: ಒಂದು ದಿನ (one day — opening), ಆಮೇಲೆ (then), ಕೊನೆಗೆ (finally). Listen for them, and use them when you retell.

ಕಥೆಯ ಒಂದು ವಾಕ್ಯ ರಚಿಸಿ — “The crow dropped stones into the pot.” Arrange the words.

ಕಾಗೆ ನೀರು ಕುಡಿದು ________. (it flew away) The crow drank the water and flew away.

ಈಗ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮುಚ್ಚಿ, ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿ — ಐದು ವಾಕ್ಯ ಸಾಕು. ಹೀಗೆ ಆರಂಭಿಸಿ: “ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಒಂದು ಕಾಗೆಗೆ ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆ ಆಯಿತು…”. ‘ಆಮೇಲೆ’ ಮತ್ತು ‘ಕೊನೆಗೆ’ ಬಳಸಿ.

Close the lesson and retell the story in your own words — five sentences are enough. Start: ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಒಂದು ಕಾಗೆಗೆ ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆ ಆಯಿತು…. Use ಆಮೇಲೆ and ಕೊನೆಗೆ. End with the moral in one line: ಕಾಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಜಾಣ!
