 ವಿಮಲಾ —  ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರೇ, “ಹೊತ್ತು” ಅಂದರೆ ಏನು? 
Teacher, what does hottu mean?  
 ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು —  ಹೊತ್ತು ಅಂದರೆ ಸಮಯ. “ಹೊತ್ತಾಯಿತು” ಅಂದರೆ ತಡ ಆಯಿತು ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥ. 
Hottu means time. Hottāyitu means it has got late.  
 ವಿಮಲಾ —  ಅರ್ಥ ಆಯಿತು! ಮುಂದಿನ ಪಾಠ ಯಾವಾಗ?

That is — if I finish today, we start today? Then I'll do them right now!

ಜೋಡಿ ಪದ: ಯಾವಾಗ … ಓ, ಆಗ …. “ಯಾವಾಗ ಮಳೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಆಗ ಹೊರಡೋಣ.” ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಪದದ ವಾಕ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ -ಓ ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ; ಉತ್ತರದ ವಾಕ್ಯ ಆಗ ಇಂದ ಶುರು.

Kannada pairs question word + answer word across two halves: ಯಾವಾಗ … -ಓ, ಆಗ … — when X happens, then Y. The first verb takes the little -ಓ tag: ಯಾವಾಗ ಮಳೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಆಗ ಹೊರಡೋಣ (when the rain stops, then let's leave). The same pattern works with other pairs you'll meet later: ಎಲ್ಲಿ…ಓ ಅಲ್ಲಿ, ಯಾರು…ಓ ಅವರು.

ಅಂದರೆ — ಕಲಿಯುವವರ ಮಿತ್ರ! ೧) ಅರ್ಥ ಕೇಳಲು: “ಹೊತ್ತು ಅಂದರೆ ಏನು?” ೨) ಅರ್ಥ ಹೇಳಲು: “ಹೊತ್ತು ಅಂದರೆ ಸಮಯ.” ೩) ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ಮಾಡಲು: “ನಾಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ — ಅಂದರೆ, ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನದ ಮೇಲೆ.”

ಅಂದರೆ (literally if one says) is the learner's best friend. Ask meanings: X ಅಂದರೆ ಏನು? (what does X mean?). Give meanings: ಹೊತ್ತು ಅಂದರೆ ಸಮಯ (hottu means time). Clarify yourself: ನಾಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ — ಅಂದರೆ, ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನದ ಮೇಲೆ (I'll come tomorrow — that is, after noon). With this one word you can learn Kannada through Kannada!
