 ಅಮ್ಮ —  ರವಿ ಫೋನ್ ಮಾಡಿದನಾ? ಏನು ಹೇಳಿದನು? 
Did Ravi phone? What did he say?  
 ತಂಗಿ —  ನಾಳೆ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. 
He said that he will come tomorrow morning.  
 ಅಮ್ಮ —  ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಬರುತ್ತಾನಾ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದೆಯಾ? 
Did you ask whether he is coming alone?  
 ತಂಗಿ —  ಕೇಳಿದೆ. ಸ್ನೇಹಿತನ ಜೊತೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಟ್ಟನು. 
I asked. He answered that he would come with a friend.  
 ಅಮ್ಮ —  ಸರಿ. ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಇರುತ್ತೀರಾ ಎಂದು ನಾಳೆ ಕೇಳುತ್ತೇನೆ. 
Fine. Tomorrow I'll ask whether they'll stay for lunch.  
 ತಂಗಿ —  ಖಂಡಿತ ಇರುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ! 
They'll say they will certainly stay!  

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಯಾರ ಮಾತನ್ನಾದರೂ ವರದಿ ಮಾಡಲು ಮಾತಿನ ನಂತರ ‘ಎಂದು’ ಇಡಿ, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಹೇಳಿದನು/ಕೇಳಿದಳು: “ನಾಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ” + ಎಂದು + ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಮಾತು ಇದ್ದ ಹಾಗೇ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ — ‘ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ’ ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ!

To report speech, keep the original words exactly as spoken, add ಎಂದು after them, then the speech verb: ನಾಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು = ‘he said: I-will-come tomorrow’ → he said he would come. Unlike English, Kannada does NOT shift the tense or person — the quote stays in its original first-person form.

ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಹೀಗೆಯೇ ವರದಿ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು: “ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಬರುತ್ತಾನಾ?” ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದೆ. ‘ಎಂದು’ ಪ್ರತಿ ವರದಿಗೂ ಬೇಕು — ಇದು ಕನ್ನಡದ ಉದ್ಧರಣ ಚಿಹ್ನೆ!

Questions report the same way: ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಬರುತ್ತಾನಾ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದೆ (I asked whether he's coming alone). Think of ಎಂದು as a spoken closing quotation mark — everything before it is the quote, the verb after it tells how it was uttered (ಹೇಳು say, ಕೇಳು ask, ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಡು answer).

ವಾಕ್ಯ ರಚಿಸಿ — “Mother said that she would give money.” Arrange the words.

“ಸೀತಾ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದಳು” — ಯಾರು ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ? In this sentence, who is not coming?

ಇಂದು ಮನೆಯವರು ಅಥವಾ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು ಹೇಳಿದ ಮೂರು ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ವರದಿ ಮಾಡಿ: “ಅಮ್ಮ … ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು”, “ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ … ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದನು”. ಮಾತು ಇದ್ದ ಹಾಗೇ ಇಡಿ!

Report three things people actually said to you today: ಅಮ್ಮ ಊಟ ಮಾಡು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು (mother told me to eat), ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತೀ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದನು. Keep each quote in its original words.
