Build ‘if’ clauses with -are on the past stem.

 ಸುಮಾ —  ನಾಳೆ ನಾವು ಪಾರ್ಕಿಗೆ ಹೋಗೋಣವಾ? 
Shall we go to the park tomorrow?  
 ರಾಜ್ —  ಮಳೆ ಬರದಿದ್ದರೆ ಖಂಡಿತ ಹೋಗೋಣ. ಮಳೆ ಬಂದರೆ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಆಟ ಆಡೋಣ. 
If it doesn't rain, let's definitely go. If it rains, let's play at home.  
 ಸುಮಾ —  ಸರಿ. ಅಣ್ಣನನ್ನು ಕರೆದರೆ ಅವನೂ ಬರುತ್ತಾನಾ? 
Okay. If we invite big brother, will he come too?  
 ರಾಜ್ —  ಅವನಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವನು ಬಂದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು — ಕ್ರಿಕೆಟ್ ಆಡಬಹುದು. 
If he has no work, he'll come. It would be good if he came — we could play cricket.  
 ಸುಮಾ —  ಬೇಗ ಹೋದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಜಾಗ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. 
If we go early, we'll get a good spot.  
 ರಾಜ್ —  ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಏಳು ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಹೊರಡೋಣ! 
In that case let's leave at seven in the morning!  

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಷರತ್ತಿಗೆ (if) ಭೂತಕಾಲದ ಕಾಂಡಕ್ಕೆ ‘ಎ’ ಸೇರಿಸಿ: ಬಂದ → ಬಂದರೆ, ಮಾಡಿದ → ಮಾಡಿದರೆ, ಹೋದ → ಹೋದರೆ, ಇದ್ದ → ಇದ್ದರೆ. ರೂಪ ಭೂತದ್ದು, ಆದರೆ ಅರ್ಥ ಭವಿಷ್ಯತ್ತಿನದೂ ಆಗಬಹುದು: ಮಳೆ ಬಂದರೆ = if it rains.

The conditional adds ‑ಅರೆ to the past stem: ಬಂದರೆ (if … comes/came), ಮಾಡಿದರೆ (if … does), ಹೋದರೆ (if … goes), ಓದಿದರೆ (if … studies), ಇದ್ದರೆ (if there is). Though built on the past stem, it points to any time: ಮಳೆ ಬಂದರೆ ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ = if it rains, we won't go.

ನಿಷೇಧ ಷರತ್ತು: ಬರದ + ಇದ್ದರೆ → ಬರದಿದ್ದರೆ (if … does not come); ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ (if not / otherwise). ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಯ ಸಲಹೆಗೆ: ನೀವು ಬಂದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು — ‘it would be good if you came’.

Negative condition: negative participle + ಇದ್ದರೆ → ಬರದಿದ್ದರೆ (if … doesn't come), ಮಳೆ ಬರದಿದ್ದರೆ (if it doesn't rain), ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ (otherwise). A polite suggestion uses ಬಂದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು (it would be good if you came) — condition + ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು.
