 ಅಪ್ಪ —  ಪವನ್, ಊಟ ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಏನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೀ?

 ಪವನ್ —  ಊಟ ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೊತ್ತು ಓದುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಮಲಗುವ ಮುಂಚೆ ಹಲ್ಲು ಉಜ್ಜುತ್ತೇನೆ. 
After dinner I read for a while. Before sleeping I brush my teeth.  
 ಅಪ್ಪ —  ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು. ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಮೊದಲು ಏನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೀ? 
Good. And in the morning, before going to school?  
 ಪವನ್ —  ಎದ್ದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ತಿಂಡಿ ತಿಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಚೀಲ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೊರಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. 
After getting up I bathe. After eating breakfast I take my bag and leave.  
 ಅಪ್ಪ —  ಮನೆ ಬಿಡುವ ಮುಂಚೆ ಅಜ್ಜಿಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಹೇಳುವುದನ್ನು ಮರೆಯಬೇಡ! 
Before leaving the house, don't forget to say namaskāra to grandma!  

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

‘After’ ಹೇಳಲು ಭೂತ ಕೃದಂತ + ಮೇಲೆ: ಊಟ ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ (after the meal), ಅವನು ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ, ತಿಂಡಿ ತಿಂದ ಮೇಲೆ, ಎದ್ದ ಮೇಲೆ. ‘ಮೇಲೆ’ ಎಂದರೆ ‘on/above’ — ಇಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಆದ ನಂತರ’ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ.

‘After’ = past relative participle + ಮೇಲೆ: ಊಟ ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ (after eating — literally ‘on the meal having happened’), ಅವನು ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ (after he comes/came), ಎದ್ದ ಮೇಲೆ (after getting up). You already know ಮೇಲೆ as ‘on/above’; after a participle it means ‘after’. ಆದ ನಂತರ is a more formal synonym.

‘Before’ ಹೇಳಲು ‑ಉವ ಕೃದಂತ + ಮುಂಚೆ ಅಥವಾ ಮೊದಲು: ಮಲಗುವ ಮುಂಚೆ (before sleeping), ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಮೊದಲು, ಮನೆ ಬಿಡುವ ಮುಂಚೆ. ಗಮನಿಸಿ: after ಭೂತ ರೂಪ, before ‑ಉವ ರೂಪ!

‘Before’ = the ‑ಉವ participle + ಮುಂಚೆ or ಮೊದಲು: ಮಲಗುವ ಮುಂಚೆ (before sleeping), ಹೋಗುವ ಮೊದಲು (before going). Note the logic: what is already done takes the past participle (+ಮೇಲೆ), what is yet to happen takes the future ‑ಉವ form (+ಮುಂಚೆ). ಮುಂಚೆ and ಮೊದಲು are interchangeable here.
