ಆಮೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮೊಲ
Story: the tortoise and the hare

A race story that bundles conditionals, time clauses and participles.

ಕಥೆ: ಆಮೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮೊಲ
 ಕಥೆ —  ಒಂದು ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓಡುವ ಒಂದು ಮೊಲ ಇತ್ತು. ಅದು ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಆಮೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ನಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. 
In a forest there was a hare that ran fast. It used to laugh at the tortoise that walked slowly.  
 ಮೊಲ —  ನೀನು ಇಷ್ಟು ನಿಧಾನ! ನನ್ನ ಜೊತೆ ಓಟಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದರೆ ಖಂಡಿತ ಸೋಲುತ್ತೀ! 
You're so slow! If you race me, you'll surely lose!  
 ಆಮೆ —  ನೋಡೋಣ. ನಾಳೆ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಓಡೋಣ. ಆ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮರವೇ ಗುರಿ. 
We'll see. Let's race tomorrow morning. That tree on the hill is the goal.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಓಟ ಶುರು ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮೊಲ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓಡಿತು. ತುಂಬಾ ಮುಂದೆ ಹೋದಾಗ ಅದು ಯೋಚಿಸಿತು — ಆಮೆ ಬರುವ ಮುಂಚೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಮಲಗಿದರೆ ಏನೂ ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು. 
After the race began, the hare ran fast. When it had gone far ahead it thought: if I sleep a little before the tortoise comes, nothing will happen.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಮೊಲ ಮರದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಮಲಗಿತು. ಆಮೆ ನಿಲ್ಲದೆ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾ ಇತ್ತು. 
The hare slept under a tree. The tortoise, without stopping, kept walking slowly.  
 ಕಥೆ —  ಮೊಲಕ್ಕೆ ಎಚ್ಚರ ಆದಾಗ ಆಮೆ ಗುರಿಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇತ್ತು! ಮೊಲ ಎಷ್ಟು ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓಡಿದರೂ ಸಮಯ ಸಾಕಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. 
When the hare woke up, the tortoise was near the goal! However fast the hare ran, there wasn't enough time.  
 ಆಮೆ —  ಗೆದ್ದೆ! ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ನಡೆದರೂ ನಿಲ್ಲದೆ ನಡೆದರೆ ಗುರಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. 
I won! Even if you walk slowly, if you walk without stopping, you reach the goal.

ಈ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೀವು ಕಲಿತ ಎಲ್ಲ ರಚನೆಗಳು ಇವೆ: ಕೃದಂತ (ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓಡುವ ಮೊಲ), ಷರತ್ತು (ಓಟಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದರೆ), ‑ರೂ (ಎಷ್ಟು ಓಡಿದರೂ), ಕಾಲವಾಚಕ (ಶುರು ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ, ಎಚ್ಚರ ಆದಾಗ, ಬರುವ ಮುಂಚೆ), ಎಂದು (ಯೋಚಿಸಿತು … ಎಂದು).

‘ನಿಲ್ಲದೆ’ = ನಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಇರುವುದು — ‘without stopping’. ನಿಷೇಧ ಕೃದಂತದ ತಮ್ಮ: ಮಾಡದೆ (without doing), ಹೇಳದೆ (without saying). ಕಥೆಯ ನೀತಿಗೆ ಗಾದೆ: ನಿಧಾನವೇ ಪ್ರಧಾನ.

ನಿಲ್ಲದೆ means ‘without stopping’ — the negative ‑ಅದೆ adverb, cousin of the negative participle: ಮಾಡದೆ (without doing), ಹೇಳದೆ (without telling). The story's moral has a proverb: ನಿಧಾನವೇ ಪ್ರಧಾನ — slowness itself is supreme.

ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಆರು-ಏಳು ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೇಳಿ. ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಒಂದು ‘ಬಂದರೆ’, ಒಂದು ‘ಆದಾಗ’, ಒಂದು ‘ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ’ ಬರಲಿ. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಗಾದೆ ಹೇಳಿ: ನಿಧಾನವೇ ಪ್ರಧಾನ!

Retell the race in six or seven sentences, using at least one ಬಂದರೆ, one ಆದಾಗ and one ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ. Finish with the proverb ನಿಧಾನವೇ ಪ್ರಧಾನ. Bonus: tell it once from the hare's point of view — ನಾನು ಮಲಗದಿದ್ದರೆ ಗೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ (if I hadn't slept, I would have won).
