 ವಿಮಲಾ —  ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ ರೈಲು ಎಷ್ಟು ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಹೊರಡುತ್ತದೆ? 
What time does the train to Mysuru leave?  
 ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ —  ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಹತ್ತೂ ಕಾಲಿಗೆ. ಈಗ ಒಂಬತ್ತೂವರೆ ಆಗಿದೆ — ಇನ್ನು ನಲವತ್ತೈದು ನಿಮಿಷ ಇದೆ. 
At quarter past ten in the morning. It's half past nine now — forty-five minutes to go.  
 ವಿಮಲಾ —  ಟಿಕೆಟ್ ಎಷ್ಟು? 
How much is the ticket?  
 ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ —  ನೂರ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೈದು ರೂಪಾಯಿ. ಎರಡು ಟಿಕೆಟ್ ಆದರೆ ಇನ್ನೂರ ಐವತ್ತು. 
One hundred and twenty-five rupees. For two tickets, two hundred and fifty.  
 ವಿಮಲಾ —  ಎರಡು ಕೊಡಿ. ಇಂದು ದಿನಾಂಕ ಎಷ್ಟು? 
Give me two. What is the date today?  
 ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ —  ಇಂದು ಜೂನ್ ಹತ್ತು, ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರದ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತಾರು.

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಗಳು: ನೂರು (100), ಸಾವಿರ (1,000), ಲಕ್ಷ (1,00,000), ಕೋಟಿ (1,00,00,00,000 ಅಲ್ಲ — 1,00,00,000!). ಕೂಡಿಸುವಾಗ “ದ” ಬರುತ್ತದೆ: ನೂರ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೈದು (125), ಸಾವಿರದ ಒಂಬೈನೂರು (1,900), ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರದ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತಾರು (2,026).

The big numbers: ನೂರು 100, ಸಾವಿರ 1,000, ಲಕ್ಷ 100,000, ಕೋಟಿ 10 million. When chaining, the larger number takes a linking -ದ (genitive): ನೂರ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೈದು 125, ಇನ್ನೂರ ಐವತ್ತು 250, ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರದ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತಾರು 2026. Years are read exactly like numbers, so 2026 is ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರದ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತಾರು.

ಸಮಯ: ಎಷ್ಟು ಗಂಟೆ? — ಮೂರು ಗಂಟೆ. ಅರ್ಧ ಸೇರಿಸಲು “-ವರೆ”: ಮೂರೂವರೆ (3:30), ನಾಲ್ಕೂವರೆ (4:30). ಕಾಲು ಸೇರಿಸಲು: ಹತ್ತೂ ಕಾಲು (10:15). ಮುಕ್ಕಾಲು: ಐದೂ ಮುಕ್ಕಾಲು (5:45). ದಿನಾಂಕ: “ಇಂದು ದಿನಾಂಕ ಎಷ್ಟು?” — “ಜೂನ್ ಹತ್ತು”. ಇಂದಿನ ಗಾದೆ: “ಕುಂಬಾರನಿಗೆ ವರುಷ, ದೊಣ್ಣೆಗೆ ನಿಮಿಷ” — ಕುಂಬಾರ ಮಡಕೆ ಮಾಡಲು ವರ್ಷ ಬೇಕು; ದೊಣ್ಣೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಒಡೆಯಲು ಒಂದು ನಿಮಿಷ ಸಾಕು. ಕಟ್ಟುವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ, ಕೆಡಿಸುವುದು ಸುಲಭ.

Time: ಎಷ್ಟು ಗಂಟೆ? 'what time?'. Halves take -ವರೆ: ಮೂರೂವರೆ 3:30; quarters use ಕಾಲು: ಹತ್ತೂ ಕಾಲು 10:15; three-quarters ಮುಕ್ಕಾಲು: ಐದೂ ಮುಕ್ಕಾಲು 5:45. 'At' a time is dative: ಹತ್ತೂ ಕಾಲಿಗೆ. For dates ask ಇಂದು ದಿನಾಂಕ ಎಷ್ಟು?. And today's gāde, fittingly about time: ಕುಂಬಾರನಿಗೆ ವರುಷ, ದೊಣ್ಣೆಗೆ ನಿಮಿಷ — the potter needs a year, the club needs a minute. Building takes ages; breaking, an instant. Use it of reputations, friendships, institutions.
