 ಗಿರಿಜಾ —  ಟೊಮೇಟೊ ಒಂದು ಕೆಜಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು? 
How much for a kilo of tomatoes?  
 ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿ —  ನಲವತ್ತು ರೂಪಾಯಿ ಅಮ್ಮ. ತುಂಬಾ ತಾಜಾ ಇದೆ. 
Forty rupees, madam. Very fresh.  
 ಗಿರಿಜಾ —  ಅಯ್ಯೋ, ತುಂಬಾ ದುಬಾರಿ! ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಿ. 
Oh no, too expensive! Reduce it a little.  
 ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿ —  ಎರಡು ಕೆಜಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡರೆ ಎಪ್ಪತ್ತು ರೂಪಾಯಿಗೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. 
If you take two kilos, I'll give them for seventy rupees.  
 ಗಿರಿಜಾ —  ಅರವತ್ತಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊಡಿ. ಅದೇ ಕೊನೆಯ ಬೆಲೆ. 
Give them for sixty. That's my final price.  
 ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿ —  ಆಯ್ತು ಅಮ್ಮ, ಅರವತ್ತೈದು ಕೊಡಿ. ನನಗೂ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಲಾಭ ಬೇಕಲ್ಲ — ಅತಿ ಆಸೆ ಗತಿ ಕೇಡು ನಿಜ, ಆದರೆ ಆಸೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಹೇಗೆ? 
Alright madam, give sixty-five. I need a little profit too — true, excessive greed brings ruin, but with no margin at all, how is one to trade?  
 ಗಿರಿಜಾ —  ಹ್ಹ! ಸರಿ, ಅರವತ್ತೈದಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಕೆಜಿ ಹಾಕಿ. 
Ha! Fine, put two kilos for sixty-five.  

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಚೌಕಾಸಿಯ ಹಂತಗಳು: ೧) ಬೆಲೆ ಕೇಳಿ — “ಒಂದು ಕೆಜಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು?”, “ಇದು ಎಷ್ಟು?”. ೨) ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ತೋರಿಸಿ — “ಅಯ್ಯೋ, ತುಂಬಾ ದುಬಾರಿ!”. ೩) ಕೇಳಿ — “ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಿ”. ೪) ನಿಮ್ಮ ಬೆಲೆ ಹೇಳಿ — “ಅರವತ್ತಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊಡಿ”. ಬೆಲೆಗೆ ಚತುರ್ಥಿ: ಅರವತ್ತಕ್ಕೆ = ಅರವತ್ತು ರೂಪಾಯಿಗೆ.

Bargaining is a four-step dance: ask the price (ಒಂದು ಕೆಜಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು? — per-kilo uses the dative -ಗೆ); gasp (ಅಯ್ಯೋ, ತುಂಬಾ ದುಬಾರಿ!); request (ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಿ — soften with ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ); then counter-offer with the dative of price: ಅರವತ್ತಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊಡಿ, 'give it for sixty'. Seal it with ಕೊನೆಯ ಬೆಲೆ, 'final price'. Measures: ಕೆಜಿ, ಅರ್ಧ ಕೆಜಿ, ಕಾಲು ಕೆಜಿ (250 g), ಲೀಟರ್, ಮೀಟರ್, ಡಜನ್.

ಇಂದಿನ ಗಾದೆ: “ಅತಿ ಆಸೆ ಗತಿ ಕೇಡು”. ಅತಿ = ಹೆಚ್ಚು; ಆಸೆ = ಬಯಕೆ; ಗತಿ = ಸ್ಥಿತಿ; ಕೇಡು = ಹಾಳು. ಅರ್ಥ: ಮಿತಿ ಮೀರಿದ ಆಸೆ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಕೆಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಚೌಕಾಸಿಯಲ್ಲೂ ಅಷ್ಟೆ — ಎರಡೂ ಕಡೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಡಬೇಕು.

Today's gāde: ಅತಿ ಆಸೆ ಗತಿ ಕೇಡು — excessive desire ruins one's state; greed leads to grief. Four tight two-syllable words, which is why it sticks. In the market it cuts both ways: the seller shouldn't overcharge, and the buyer shouldn't squeeze too hard. Note how the vendor quotes it against himself with a wink — using a gāde with humour is peak fluency.

Roleplay buying mangoes: the vendor wants ನೂರ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತು per kilo. Run the full bargain aloud, playing both parts — the gasp, ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಿ, your counter-offer in the dative, and the final ಆಯ್ತು. Bonus: end the deal with ಅತಿ ಆಸೆ ಗತಿ ಕೇಡು and a smile.
