 ಸಂಗೀತಾ —  ಅಮ್ಮ, ದುಬೈಯಿಂದ ರವಿಯ ಪತ್ರ ಬಂದಿದೆ! ಓದುತ್ತೇನೆ ಕೇಳು. 
Mother, a letter from Ravi has come from Dubai! Listen, I'll read it.  
 ಪತ್ರ —  ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಸಂಗೀತಾ, ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀಯ? ನಾನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ, ಸಂಬಳ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಮನೆಯ ಊಟದ ನೆನಪು ತುಂಬಾ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. 
Dear Sangeetha, how are you? I am well. Here the work is heavy and the salary is good, but I miss home food very much.  
 ಪತ್ರ —  ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು — ವಿದೇಶದ ಜೀವನ ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಎಂದು. ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಯಿತು: ದೂರದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ನುಣ್ಣಗೆ! 
Everyone used to say life abroad is heaven. After coming I understood: the distant hill looks smooth to the eye!  
 ಪತ್ರ —  ಅಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಹೇಳು. ಬೇಗ ಉತ್ತರ ಬರೆ. ಇಂತಿ ನಿನ್ನ ಅಣ್ಣ, ರವಿ.

 ಅಮ್ಮ —  ಪಾಪ! ಅವನಿಗೆ ಇವತ್ತೇ ಉತ್ತರ ಬರೆ.

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಅನೌಪಚಾರಿಕ ಪತ್ರದ ರೂಪ: ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ “ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ + ಹೆಸರು + ಗೆ / ನಿಗೆ” (ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಅಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ, ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಗೆಳೆಯ ರಾಜುವಿಗೆ). ಆಮೇಲೆ ಕುಶಲ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ: “ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀಯ? ನಾನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ.” ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ “ಬೇಗ ಉತ್ತರ ಬರೆ” ಮತ್ತು “ಇಂತಿ ನಿನ್ನ …” ಎಂದು ಮುಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

The informal letter skeleton: open with ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ('dear', literally 'of love') plus the name in the dative — ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಅಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ, ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಸಂಗೀತಾಗೆ. Then the well-being exchange: ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀಯ? ನಾನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ. Close with ಬೇಗ ಉತ್ತರ ಬರೆ ('write back soon') and sign off ಇಂತಿ ನಿನ್ನ… — ಇಂತಿ is a lovely old formula meaning 'thus / with this', the Kannada 'yours'. For a quick text message, the same moves shrink to a line: ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀಯ? ನಾಳೆ ಸಿಗೋಣವಾ?

ಇಂದಿನ ಗಾದೆ: “ದೂರದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ನುಣ್ಣಗೆ”. ದೂರದಿಂದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ನುಣ್ಣಗೆ (smooth) ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ; ಹತ್ತಿರ ಹೋದರೆ ಕಲ್ಲು-ಮುಳ್ಳು ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅರ್ಥ: ದೂರದ ವಸ್ತು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ, ಆದರೆ ನಿಜ ಬೇರೆ ಇರಬಹುದು.

Today's gāde: ದೂರದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ನುಣ್ಣಗೆ — the faraway hill looks smooth to the eye. Walk up to it and you find rocks and thorns. It is the Kannada 'the grass is greener on the other side', and Ravi uses it perfectly of glamorous-looking life abroad.

Write Sangeetha's reply to Ravi — four or five sentences: the ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ opening, a well-being line, one piece of home news, and the ಇಂತಿ closing. Then compress the same content into a two-line text message. Feeling the difference between letter style and message style is today's real skill.
