Like a cooking recipe, a grammar rule has a shape: when (the condition), what happens (the operation), and how (the example). From Keshiraja's time to today's school books, rules are stated this way. Today we read two real rules and apply them to new words.

ಸ್ವರದ ಮುಂದೆ ಸ್ವರ ಬಂದಾಗ, ಅರ್ಥ ಕೆಡದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಮೊದಲ ಪದದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಸ್ವರ ಲೋಪವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ನಿಯಮ 5

ಇದು ಲೋಪಸಂಧಿ: ಮಾತು + ಇಲ್ಲ = ಮಾತಿಲ್ಲ; ಊರು + ಅಲ್ಲಿ = ಊರಲ್ಲಿ; ಏನು + ಆದರೂ = ಏನಾದರೂ.

When vowel meets vowel and the meaning is not harmed, the first vowel drops. This is ಲೋಪಸಂಧಿ: ಮಾತಿಲ್ಲ, ಊರಲ್ಲಿ, ಏನಾದರೂ.

ಸ್ವರದ ಮುಂದೆ ಸ್ವರ ಬಂದಾಗ ಲೋಪ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೆಡುವಲ್ಲಿ, ಇ ಈ ಎ ಏ ಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ಯಕಾರವೂ, ಅ ಆ ಉ ಊ ಒ ಓ ಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ವಕಾರವೂ ಆಗಮವಾಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.

ನಿಯಮ 6

ಇದು ಆಗಮಸಂಧಿ: ಮನೆ + ಅನ್ನು = ಮನೆಯನ್ನು; ಗುರು + ಅನ್ನು = ಗುರುವನ್ನು; ಹೂ + ಅನ್ನು = ಹೂವನ್ನು.

Where dropping would spoil the meaning, a glue letter steps in: ಯ after i/e vowels, ವ after a/u/o vowels. This is ಆಗಮಸಂಧಿ: ಮನೆಯನ್ನು, ಗುರುವನ್ನು, ಹೂವನ್ನು.

ಅನ್ವಯದ ಕ್ರಮ — ಒಂದು ಹೊಸ ಪದ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ: ಕೆರೆ + ಅಲ್ಲಿ. ಹಂತ ೧: ಸಂದರ್ಭ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತದೆಯೇ? ಎ-ಕಾರದ ಮುಂದೆ ಅ-ಕಾರ — ಸ್ವರದ ಮುಂದೆ ಸ್ವರ, ಹೌದು. ಹಂತ ೨: ಲೋಪ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ? “ಕೆರಲ್ಲಿ” — ಅರ್ಥ ಕೆಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಂತ ೩: ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಆಗಮ; ಎ-ಕಾರದ ಮುಂದೆ ಯ — ಕೆರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ. ನಿಮ್ಮ ನಾಲಿಗೆ ಮೊದಲೇ ಹೇಳಿದ ಉತ್ತರವನ್ನೇ ನಿಯಮವೂ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿತು!

Applying a rule — take a new word: ಕೆರೆ + ಅಲ್ಲಿ. Step 1: does the condition match? Vowel before vowel — yes. Step 2: try dropping — ಕೆರಲ್ಲಿ spoils the word. Step 3: so insertion applies; after ಎ comes ಯ — ಕೆರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ. The rule delivers exactly what your tongue already said!
