ಸಂಧಿ ಮಾಡಬೇಕೆ, ಬೇಡವೆ?
Sandhi or not? When to join and when not to

“ಏನಾಯಿತು?” ಎಂದೂ ಕೇಳುತ್ತೀರಿ, “ಏನು ಆಯಿತು?” ಎಂದೂ ಕೇಳುತ್ತೀರಿ — ಎರಡೂ ಸರಿ! ಆದರೆ “ಮರವನ್ನು” ಬದಲು “ಮರ ಅನ್ನು” ಎಂದು ಯಾರೂ ಬರೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಂಧಿ ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ಕಡ್ಡಾಯ, ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ಇಚ್ಛೆಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟದ್ದು, ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ನಿಷಿದ್ಧ. ಈ ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ವಿವೇಕವನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯೋಣ.

You say both ಏನಾಯಿತು and ಏನು ಆಯಿತು — both are fine. But nobody writes ಮರ ಅನ್ನು for ಮರವನ್ನು. Sandhi is obligatory in some places, optional in others, and forbidden in a few. This lesson teaches you that judgement.

ಮನೆ+ಇಂದ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ಲೋಪ ಮಾಡಿ “ಮನಿಂದ” ಎಂದು ಬರೆದರೆ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೆಡುತ್ತದೆ — ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಲೋಪ ನಿಷೇಧ; ಯಕಾರಾಗಮವೇ ದಾರಿ (ಮನೆಯಿಂದ). ಸಂಧಿಯ ಗುರಿ ಸುಲಭ ಉಚ್ಚಾರ; ಅರ್ಥ ಹಾಳಾದರೆ ಸಂಧಿಯ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ.

The whole point of sandhi is smoother speech. If a join garbles the word — like ಮನಿಂದ for ಮನೆ+ಇಂದ — that join is forbidden; the language chooses another route (ಮನೆಯಿಂದ) or simply keeps the words apart.

ಪದದ ಒಳಗೆ — ಅಂದರೆ ನಾಮಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗೆ ವಿಭಕ್ತಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ ಸೇರುವಾಗ — ಸಂಧಿ ತಪ್ಪದು: ಮರವನ್ನು, ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಗುರುವಿಗೆ. ಆದರೆ ವಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಕ್ಕಪಕ್ಕದ ಪದಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಸಂಧಿ ಇಚ್ಛೆಗೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟದ್ದು: ಮಾತು ಆಡು / ಮಾತಾಡು, ಏನು ಆಯಿತು / ಏನಾಯಿತು — ಎರಡೂ ಶುದ್ಧ. ಪದ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ; ಗದ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟತೆಗಾಗಿ ಬಿಡಿಸಿಯೂ ಬರೆಯಬಹುದು.

Within a word — stem plus suffix — sandhi is compulsory: ಮರವನ್ನು, ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಗುರುವಿಗೆ. Between separate words in a sentence it is optional: ಮಾತು ಆಡು / ಮಾತಾಡು, ಏನು ಆಯಿತು / ಏನಾಯಿತು are both correct. Poets join freely for metre; in prose you may keep words apart for clarity.

ಬರೆಯುವಾಗ ನೆನಪಿಡಿ: ವಿರಾಮಚಿಹ್ನೆ ಇರುವೆಡೆ (ಅಲ್ಪವಿರಾಮ, ಪೂರ್ಣವಿರಾಮ) ಸಂಧಿ ಮಾಡಬಾರದು — ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಧ್ವನಿಯೇ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಂದೇಹ ಬಂದಾಗ ಸಂಧಿ ಉಪಕರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಕೂಡಿಸಿ-ಬಿಡಿಸಿ ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿ.

When writing, never join across punctuation — a comma or full stop means the voice pauses, and sandhi needs unbroken breath. When in doubt, try the sandhi tool to join and split words and check yourself.
