ಸಮಾಸ ಎಂದರೇನು?
What is a samāsa? Compounds and the vigraha sentence

ನೀವು ಮೊದಲಿನಿಂದಲೂ “ಮಳೆಗಾಲ”, “ಹೊಸಗನ್ನಡ”, “ಕೈಕಾಲು” ಎಂಬ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀರಿ. ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಪದದಂತೆ ಕಂಡರೂ ಒಳಗೆ ಎರಡು ಪದಗಳಿವೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಪದಗಳು ಸೇರುವುದೇ ಸಮಾಸ.

From Arc A you already use ಮಳೆಗಾಲ, ಹೊಸಗನ್ನಡ, ಕೈಕಾಲು without thinking. Each looks like one word but hides two. This fusing of words is called ಸಮಾಸ — the topic of this whole level.

ಮಳೆಯ ಕಾಲ → ಮಳೆಗಾಲ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ “ಯ” ಎಂಬ ಷಷ್ಠೀ ವಿಭಕ್ತಿ ಲೋಪವಾಯಿತು. ಸೇರಿ ಆದ ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಮಸ್ತಪದ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರು. ಮೊದಲ ಪದ ಪೂರ್ವಪದ, ಎರಡನೆಯದು ಉತ್ತರಪದ.

ಮಳೆಯ ಕಾಲ becomes ಮಳೆಗಾಲ: the genitive ending ಯ drops out. The fused result is the ಸಮಸ್ತಪದ; its first member is the ಪೂರ್ವಪದ (ಮಳೆ), its second the ಉತ್ತರಪದ (ಕಾಲ).

ಯಾವ ಸಮಾಸವನ್ನೂ ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಮೊದಲು ವಿಗ್ರಹವಾಕ್ಯ ಬರೆಯಿರಿ: ಮಳೆಗಾಲ = ಮಳೆಯ ಕಾಲ; ಕೈಕಾಲು = ಕೈಯೂ ಕಾಲೂ. ವಿಗ್ರಹವಾಕ್ಯದ ರೂಪವೇ ಮುಂದೆ ಸಮಾಸದ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

To analyse any compound, first write its vigraha sentence: ಮಳೆಗಾಲ = ಮಳೆಯ ಕಾಲ; ಕೈಕಾಲು = ಕೈಯೂ ಕಾಲೂ. The shape of the vigraha is what tells you which type of samāsa you have — the key skill for this level.

ಮಳೆ + ಕಾಲ ಎರಡೂ ಕನ್ನಡ — ಸರಿ. ರಾಜ + ಕುಮಾರ ಎರಡೂ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ — ಸರಿ. ಆದರೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ “ಮಹಾ” ಪದಕ್ಕೆ ಕನ್ನಡದ “ದಾರಿ” ಸೇರಿಸಿ “ಮಹಾದಾರಿ” ಎನ್ನುವುದು ದೋಷ; ಕನ್ನಡವು “ಹಿರಿ + ದಾರಿ → ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ” ಎನ್ನುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಬೆರಕೆಗಳು ರೂಢಿಯಿಂದ ಒಪ್ಪಿತವಾಗಿವೆ.

ಮಳೆ + ಕಾಲ (both Kannada) is fine; ರಾಜ + ಕುಮಾರ (both Sanskrit) is fine. But pairing Sanskrit ಮಹಾ with Kannada ದಾರಿ into a compound is the fault called ಅರಿಸಮಾಸ — Kannada instead built ಹಿರಿ + ದಾರಿ → ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ (highway). A few mixed compounds have become acceptable by long usage, but as a learner avoid creating new ones.
