ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ವಸ್ತು ಯಾವುದು? ಅದಕ್ಕೆ “ಅನ್ನು” ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ರಾಮ ಏನು ಓದುತ್ತಾನೆ? ಪುಸ್ತಕ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ — “ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದುತ್ತಾನೆ”.

The thing a verb acts on — what you read, eat, see — takes the ending -annu. Rama reads what? A book (ಪುಸ್ತಕ). So: ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದುತ್ತಾನೆ. English shows the object by word order; Kannada tags it with -annu, so the words can move around freely.

How -annu attaches depends on the noun's final sound. After -a, a glue-sound ವ್ appears: ಪುಸ್ತಕ → ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು. After -e or -i, the glue is ಯ್: ಮನೆ → ಮನೆಯನ್ನು. After -u, the u simply drops: ಹಣ್ಣು → ಹಣ್ಣನ್ನು, ಹಾಲು → ಹಾಲನ್ನು.
