Negation III: haven't, don't want, shouldn't

ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ (ಇನ್ನೂ ಆಗಿಲ್ಲ), ಬೇಡ (ಬೇಕು ಇಲ್ಲ), ಮಾಡಬಾರದು (ಮಾಡುವುದು ತಪ್ಪು).

ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ (haven't done), ಬೇಡ (don't want), ಮಾಡಬಾರದು (shouldn't do).

 ಸಂತೋಷ್ —  ಇನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ ಅಜ್ಜಿ. ಕೆಲಸ ಮುಗಿದಿಲ್ಲ. 
Not yet, grandma. My work isn't finished.  
 ಅಜ್ಜಿ —  ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಕಾಫಿ ಕುಡಿ. ಸಕ್ಕರೆ ಎಷ್ಟು? 
Then have some coffee. How much sugar?  
 ಸಂತೋಷ್ —  ಸಕ್ಕರೆ ಬೇಡ ಅಜ್ಜಿ. ವೈದ್ಯರು ಹೇಳಿದರು — ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಕ್ಕರೆ ತಿನ್ನಬಾರದು. 
No sugar, grandma. The doctor said one shouldn't eat too much sugar.  
 ಅಜ್ಜಿ —  ಸರಿ ಸರಿ. ರಾತ್ರಿ ತಡವಾಗಿ ಕಾಫಿ ಕುಡಿಯಬಾರದು — ಅದೂ ನೆನಪಿರಲಿ! 
Fine, fine. One shouldn't drink coffee late at night either — remember that too!  

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಮೂರನೆಯ ನಿಷೇಧ: ಮಾಡಿ + ಇಲ್ಲ = ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ — “ಇನ್ನೂ ಆಗಿಲ್ಲ”: ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ, ಬಸ್ ಬಂದಿಲ್ಲ, ಕೆಲಸ ಮುಗಿದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೋಲಿಸಿ: ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ = ಆಗ ಮಾಡಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ (didn't); ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ = ಈವರೆಗೆ ಆಗಿಲ್ಲ (haven't).

The third verb negative: participle + ಇಲ್ಲ → ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ, meaning haven't (yet): ಇನ್ನೂ ಊಟ ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ (I haven't eaten yet), ಬಸ್ ಬಂದಿಲ್ಲ (the bus hasn't come). Contrast the pair: ನಿನ್ನೆ ಮಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ (I didn't do it yesterday — closed past) vs ಇನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ (I haven't done it yet — still pending). ಇನ್ನೂ (still/yet) loves this form.

ಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದರ ನಿಷೇಧ ಬೇಡ: ನನಗೆ ಕಾಫಿ ಬೇಡ; ಆ ಮಾತು ಬೇಡ. ಮಾಡಬಾರದು = ಮಾಡುವುದು ತಪ್ಪು/ನಿಷಿದ್ಧ: ಸುಳ್ಳು ಹೇಳಬಾರದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಸ ಹಾಕಬಾರದು.

Two more essentials. ಬೇಡ is the negative of ಬೇಕು (want/need): ನನಗೆ ಸಕ್ಕರೆ ಬೇಡ (I don't want sugar). And -ಬಾರದು on the verb stem means shouldn't / must not: ಸುಳ್ಳು ಹೇಳಬಾರದು (one shouldn't lie), ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಸ ಹಾಕಬಾರದು (don't throw garbage here) — the standard wording of every rule and signboard.

ಇಂದು ಇನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡದ ಎರಡು ಕೆಲಸ ಹೇಳಿ — “ಇನ್ನೂ … ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ.” ಮನೆಯ ಎರಡು ನಿಯಮ ಹೇಳಿ — “… ಮಾಡಬಾರದು.” ಒಂದು ಬೇಡ ವಾಕ್ಯವೂ ಹೇಳಿ.

Say two things you haven't done yet today (ಇನ್ನೂ … ಮಾಡಿಲ್ಲ), two house rules with … ಮಾಡಬಾರದು, and politely refuse something with ಬೇಡ.
