ಆಜ್ಞೆ-ವಿನಂತಿ: ಮಾಡು/ಮಾಡಿ/ಮಾಡಿರಿ; ನಿಷೇಧ ಮಾಡಬೇಡ/ಮಾಡಬೇಡಿ.

Commands and requests at three politeness levels, plus the negative command.

 ಶಾರದಾ —  ಓ, ಬನ್ನಿ ಬನ್ನಿ! ಒಳಗೆ ಬನ್ನಿ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ. 
Oh, come in, come in! Please sit here.  
 ಅತಿಥಿ —  ಧನ್ಯವಾದ. ತೊಂದರೆ ಮಾಡಬೇಡಿ, ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನೀರು ಸಾಕು. 
Thank you. Don't go to any trouble — a little water is enough.  
 ಶಾರದಾ —  ಹಾಗೆ ಹೇಳಬೇಡಿ! ಕಾಫಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಚಕ್ಕುಲಿ ತಿನ್ನಿ. 
Don't say that! Have some coffee, and eat chakkuli with it.  
 ಶಾರದಾ —  ಗೋಪಿ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾ! ಅಂಕಲ್‌ಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಹೇಳು. 
Gopi, come here! Say namaskāra to uncle.  
 ಗೋಪಿ —  ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಅಂಕಲ್!

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಆಜ್ಞೆಗೆ ಮೂರು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು: ಮಾಡು (ಗೆಳೆಯರಿಗೆ, ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ), ಮಾಡಿ (ಗೌರವ), ಮಾಡಿರಿ (ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗೌರವ, ಗ್ರಾಂಥಿಕ). ಹಾಗೆಯೇ: ಬಾ/ಬನ್ನಿ, ಕೊಡು/ಕೊಡಿ, ಹೇಳು/ಹೇಳಿ, ತಿನ್ನು/ತಿನ್ನಿ, ಕುಳಿತುಕೊ/ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ.

Commands come in three steps of politeness: bare stem ಮಾಡು (to friends, kids), -ಇ form ಮಾಡಿ (respectful — your default with adults), and ಮಾಡಿರಿ (extra formal/written). Irregulars to memorize: ಬಾ / ಬನ್ನಿ (come), ತಾ / ತನ್ನಿ (bring). The -ಇ form doubles as please do — ಕೊಡಿ (please give), ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ (please sit).

ನಿಷೇಧದ ಆಜ್ಞೆ: ಕ್ರಿಯೆ + ಬೇಡ/ಬೇಡಿ — ಮಾಡಬೇಡ, ಮಾಡಬೇಡಿ; ಹೋಗಬೇಡ; ಹೆದರಬೇಡಿ. ಮೃದು ಮಾಡಲು “ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ”, “ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು” ಸೇರಿಸಿ: ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಬಾಗಿಲು ಮುಚ್ಚಿ.

Negative commands take -ಬೇಡ (informal) / -ಬೇಡಿ (respectful) on the stem: ಮಾಡಬೇಡ (don't do it), ಹೋಗಬೇಡ (don't go), ಹೆದರಬೇಡಿ (don't be afraid). Soften any request with ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ (a little) or ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು (please): ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಬಾಗಿಲು ಮುಚ್ಚಿ — please close the door.

ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ________. (ಕುಳಿತುಕೊ — ಗೌರವ) Please sit here.

“ಅಲ್ಲಿ ________!” (don't go — to a child) Don't go there! (to a child)

ವಾಕ್ಯ ರಚಿಸಿ — “Please give me a little water.” Arrange the words.

ಜೋಡಿಸಿ — ಗೆಳೆಯನಿಗೆ / ಹಿರಿಯರಿಗೆ. Match informal with respectful.

ಬಳಸಿ ನೋಡಿ · Use it

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಗೆ ಅತಿಥಿ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಐದು ಮಾತು ಹೇಳಿ: ಬನ್ನಿ, ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ, ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ… ಒಂದು ನಿಷೇಧವೂ ಇರಲಿ — “ಸಂಕೋಚ ಮಾಡಬೇಡಿ!” (ಸಂಕೋಚ = hesitation)

A guest is at your door. Welcome them with five commands: ಬನ್ನಿ, ಒಳಗೆ ಬನ್ನಿ, ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ, ಕಾಫಿ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ… and one negative: ಸಂಕೋಚ ಮಾಡಬೇಡಿ (don't be shy)!
