ಬರಬಹುದು, ಬರಬೇಕು, ಬರಬಾರದು
May, must, must not

ಮಾಡಬಹುದು (ಅನುಮತಿ-ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ), ಮಾಡಬೇಕು (ಅಗತ್ಯ), ಮಾಡಬಾರದು (ನಿಷೇಧ).

The modal triplet on the verb stem: -ಬಹುದು, -ಬೇಕು, -ಬಾರದು.

 ಗ್ರಂಥಪಾಲಕ —  ಬರಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ ಒಳಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಬಾರದು. 
You may. But you must not talk inside.  
 ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ —  ಸರಿ ಸರ್. ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮನೆಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಬಹುದಾ? 
Okay sir. May I take books home?  
 ಗ್ರಂಥಪಾಲಕ —  ಹೋಗಬಹುದು — ಒಂದು ವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಪಸ್ ಕೊಡಬೇಕು. ಅದು ನಿಯಮ. 
You may — you must return them within a week. That's the rule.  
 ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ —  ಖಂಡಿತ ಕೊಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ನಾನು ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಓದಬೇಕು! 
I'll definitely return them. I have to study a lot for the exam!  

ವಿವರಣೆ · Explanation

ಕ್ರಿಯೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ್ಕೆ ಮೂರು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ: ೧) ಬಹುದು = ಅನುಮತಿ ಅಥವಾ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ — ಬರಬಹುದು, ಮಳೆ ಬರಬಹುದು; ೨) ಬೇಕು = ಅಗತ್ಯ — ಓದಬೇಕು, ಹೋಗಬೇಕು; ೩) ಬಾರದು = ಮಾಡುವುದು ತಪ್ಪು — ಮಾತನಾಡಬಾರದು.

Stick these onto the bare verb stem. -ಬಹುದು = may/can: ಬರಬಹುದು (you may come), and also might: ಇಂದು ಮಳೆ ಬರಬಹುದು (it may rain today). -ಬೇಕು = must/should, and also want to: ನಾನು ಓದಬೇಕು (I must / want to study). -ಬಾರದು = must not: ಮಾತನಾಡಬಾರದು (no talking). All three are invariant — same form for every person.

ಅನುಮತಿ ಕೇಳಲು -ಬಹುದಾ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ: ಒಳಗೆ ಬರಬಹುದಾ? ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂರಬಹುದಾ? “ಯಾರು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲು ಮುಂದೆ ಸರ್ವನಾಮ: ನಾನು ಹೋಗಬೇಕು, ನೀವು ಬರಬೇಕು.

Ask permission with the question tag: ಒಳಗೆ ಬರಬಹುದಾ? (may I come in?), ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂರಬಹುದಾ? (may I sit here?). Since the modal doesn't change, the pronoun shows who: ನಾನು ಹೋಗಬೇಕು (I have to go), ನೀವು ಖಂಡಿತ ಬರಬೇಕು (you simply must come — the classic warm invitation).

ನಾಳೆ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಇದೆ; ನಾನು ಇವತ್ತು ________. (ಓದು — must) There's an exam tomorrow; I must study today.

“ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜೋರಾಗಿ ________.” In a hospital one must not talk loudly.

“ಆಕಾಶ ಕಪ್ಪಾಗಿದೆ — ಮಳೆ ________.” The sky is dark — it might rain.

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶಾಲೆ/ಕಚೇರಿಯ ಮೂರು ನಿಯಮ ಹೇಳಿ — ಒಂದು ಬಹುದು, ಒಂದು ಬೇಕು, ಒಂದು ಬಾರದು ಬಳಸಿ. ಉದಾ: “ಒಳಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮಾತನಾಡಬಹುದು; ಸಮಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬರಬೇಕು; ಕಸ ಹಾಕಬಾರದು.”

State three rules of your school or office, one with each modal: something permitted (-ಬಹುದು), something required (-ಬೇಕು), something forbidden (-ಬಾರದು).
